Meta is preparing to launch an open source coding tool called "Code LlaMA," which is based on its language model LlaMA 2. This new AI is designed for coding and is expected to compete against proprietary software from companies like OpenAI and Google. The release could happen as soon as next week.
According to insiders who spoke to The Information, this "Code LlaMA" model will be available for free online, following Meta's strategy of making AI software widely accessible. The AI is built on the LlaMA language model and will provide developers with automatic code suggestions as they type. While the exact functionalities remain to be seen, this feature could put it on par with other premium coding AI software in the market.
Meta's recent large language model, LlaMA 2, was developed with Microsoft and trained on more text content than its previous version. Meta's open source approach has garnered attention despite its late entry into the consumer AI space. Just this month, they open sourced the Audiocraft AI model, which includes tools like MusicGen and AudioGen.
It's important to note that Meta's AI efforts aren't just for unknown developers. The company aims to integrate AI into its social media platforms and metaverse ambitions. Open sourcing AI tools can also challenge competitors while Meta maintains its advertising dominance.
